Labrador Retrievers, move aside. A new top dog has arrived in town.
According to the American Kennel Club's 2022 registration figures, the Labrador Retriever has lost its position as the most popular dog breed in the US for the first time in 31 years. It is replaced by the adorable and little French Bulldog.
Throughout the past several decades, the French Bulldog has steadily moved up the AKC rankings, reaching No. 14 in 2012. The breed was ranked No. 2 in 2021, behind the well-liked labs but before Golden Retrievers.
Who can resist those cute bat-like ears and wrinkled nose, after all? From Reese Witherspoon to Megan Thee Stallion, the breed has been a favorite among celebs.
According to the AKC, this breed's petite size and calm temperament play a part in what makes it so simple to adore. French Bulldogs are a wonderful choice for people who live in apartments or smaller homes because they don't normally bark much and don't require as much activity as larger dogs.
Nonetheless, French Bulldogs, like many dog breeds, are susceptible to a number of health issues, including those that impair breathing. Due to their small airways and short nostrils, flat-faced breeds like the English Bulldog and Pug are particularly prone to these issues. Due to the fact that these dogs have been bred to exhibit certain traits, some vets have issued a warning against purchasing them.
